A Weekend in Canelli, Piemonte

FINALLY. My original photos.
Yippee for functioning USB ports and newly-discovered wireless internet in Modena's Piazza Grande!!

Ok. Hi!
These photos are from a weekend in Canelli-- in the region of Piemonte, near Asti-- a town with 5+ wineries, one of which is owned by my friend Sirio's family. I went up to see Sirio and we spent a Saturday with funny pouches around our necks, housing a wine glass which we drank from at each winery-- tasting whites and reds of all kinds and flavors. Such a cultural experience.

The first photo (above) is of the central Canelli hill-- from Sirio's driveway.

We walked in tunnels 38 meters underground where the wine is housed while it ferments over years and years. Some of the wines are in bottles, on racks made up of holes where they sit, face down. Then there are tunnels with barrels against the walls. All in all, the fermentation happens underground in an environment that is 13 degrees Celsius year round.

Different wines are fermented in different ways. Some of the explanations we received on the tour have been lost in translation, but thanks to my very own translator, I did catch some of it! :) Basically, there's tons of turning procedures. Sugar and yeast lie inside the bottles of some wines, and as they are turned, it is absorbed into the liquid. My favorite piece of info, again kind of vague cause of translation, is that sometimes the wine in just the neck of the wine bottle is frozen-- that bit is removed, and a new bit of wine is inserted into the bottle-- to form a new type of wine. SO insane. I love it!!

Contratto. The biggest of the wineries. Magic. Magic. Magic.

It did my soul SUCH GOOD to go on two bike rides. This photo-ed one is when we went up outside Canelli into the country a bit...

Ok! Ciao for now!!!
I'm teaching this afternoon. A group of intermediate-English level Pharmacists. SO exciting. Seriously. I love it. I was teaching (using a book) vocabulary all about pregnancy, infertility, pre and post-natal care, etc. So much fun. We finish that module today I think...

Ok. Byebye!!!

What is up? Love the pics the explanation behind them all. You seem to capture the essence of your daily life there. One thing though, I believe the translator probalbly translated very well. I don't know just a feeling I have. I just think your too hard on him. Poor guy. Well besides that keep up the good work.
